American Hustle and Blue Jasmine had a number of similarities, not least the same actor playing a minor role in each film. The main character in both movies also needed prescribed medication to get them through to the end of the film. Both films promised much but went on a bit and didn’t end as strongly as they started. Some great acting in both films and no wonder Cate Blanchette won the Oscar.
Both films involved confidence tricks based in reality. Both were really about betrayal at the relationship level. both had full houses and appreciative audiences.
The One Direction movie was phenomenal. Our best attended matinee ever? Despite the modern movie the feel in the hall was similar to the kids matinees we might all have gone to as youngsters ourselves.?
Let’s not forget the shorts which were also thought provoking and beautifully shot showing Edinburgh and Falkirk at their best. One audience member did point out that Lief would have been a silent movie if you took out the swearing! Lovely soundtrack for The Kelpies supplied courtesy of our technical guru Mr Wilson.
All in all a great weekend of cinema for Balerno. See you again in June.
On Saturday 26th May our main feature will be Blue Jasmine and finds the director Woody Allen in peak late-period form.
The film follows the story of Jasmine French who used to be on the top of the heap as a New York socialite, but now is returning to her estranged sister in San Francisco utterly ruined. As Jasmine struggles with her haunting memories of a privileged past bearing dark realities she ignored, she tries to recover in her present. Unfortunately, it all proves a losing battle as Jasmine’s narcissistic hangups and their consequences begin to overwhelm her. In doing so, her old pretensions and new deceits begin to foul up everyone’s lives, especially her own.
