Wildfire Explorers Kayak Fundraising

Wildfire Explorer Scouts are looking forward to inviting our local community to take part in two upcoming fundraising initiatives in March and April.

The group, which is based in Balerno, is made up of 14 – 18yr olds who meet up on Friday evenings to enjoy activities that can range from traditional wildfire cooking through to learning how to knit. Ambition is largely driven by the Explorers themselves and is reflected in their decision to lay the groundwork for supporting kayaking expeditions in the years ahead.

Towards this aim, most of the Scouts will undertake a five day camp at Lochgoilhead National Activity Centre during the summer. The camp will involve two days completing the British Canoe Union 2 star award, one day completing a Foundation Safety Rescue course, and a kayaking expedition led by Lochgoilhead staff.

To maximise the opportunity for Explorers to pass the 2 star assessments we have already taken part in a number of pool sessions. These sessions are proving vital in building confidence and skills, and importantly have been extended to involve Beavers and cubs from 51st Scout Group.

In the latter regard 51st Balerno Scout Group allows Wildfire to use their kayaks through a partnership agreement. However these kayaks are typically sized for cubs and scouts and to allow us to participate in more adventurous trips we need bigger kayaks and other necessary equipment.

To help us achieve our goal of purchasing kayaks we are planning a number of fundraising activities the first of which are as follows:
